
VERTEBRAL SPINE I
The seminar VERTEBRAL SPINE explores the anatomy, biomechanics, and functional movement of the vertebral column, with particular emphasis on how these principles can be intelligently applied to the practice of Iyengar Yoga.
Through anatomical observation, precise alignment, and experiential practice, we will examine how the spine contributes to posture, load distribution, stability, mobility, balance, and whole-body integration in asana practice. Particular attention will be given to the interaction between the vertebral column, pelvis, rib cage, and extremities, as well as to the ways in which spinal movement is influenced by the anatomical structure and function of surrounding tissues.
The vertebral column constitutes the central structural axis of the body. It provides mechanical support for the trunk and head, protects the spinal cord, and allows controlled movement through a complex interaction between vertebrae, intervertebral discs, facet joints, ligaments, muscles, and connective tissues. Its regional organization into cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacral, and coccygeal segments reflects distinct anatomical and biomechanical characteristics, which influence the available range and quality of movement.
The spine is not an isolated structure. Its function is closely integrated with the pelvis, rib cage, respiratory system, shoulder girdle, and lower limbs. Understanding these relationships is essential for analysing movement patterns, identifying compensatory strategies, and applying appropriate modifications to asana practice.
A comprehensive understanding of spinal osteology, arthrology, myology, biomechanics, and load management enables practitioners and teachers to approach asana with greater anatomical awareness, precision, safety, and efficiency. The workshop will also consider individual anatomical variation and common spinal conditions, emphasizing the importance of adapting practice according to structural characteristics, functional limitations, and individual needs.
